One of the most rewarding projects involved a faith-based, Florida-based nonprofit that grew organically out of the kindness and actions of a few individuals. Nurturing Hope for the Nations supports schools, health facilities, and an orphanage for youth and families in Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya — a community in desperate need.
Nurturing Hope for the Nations is a faith-based nonprofit focused on supporting youth and families in Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya, through education, culturally appropriate holistic care, and community support.
The challenge was creating a brand identity that felt compassionate and true to their organic roots. They needed a hopeful mark that appeared credible, modern, and globally trustworthy.
I led the visual identity development, focusing on a logo system that balanced an honest identity and a sense of humanity with the need for long-term nonprofit professionalism and uniqueness.
To understand the brand’s needs, I also had to understand the origin story: Cameo Griffiths found unexpected joy in the midst of poverty during a mission trip to Africa. Watching a woman who couldn’t walk drag herself forward just to say “thank you” for her work, Cameo realized that Western charity had masked her view of reality.
The organization grew out of this need and a light bulb moment. Out of organic contributions, the efforts put forward continue to shape lives so they can shape their nation.
Operating in such an environment, versatility was key to success. The brand identity developed had to stand the test of time and be flexible for digital, print, and merch. The identity had to work in many different uses, but most importantly, it had to achieve a level of clarity, definition, and usability for the client, their donors, and partners.
We landed on the following two options:
What we communicated:
The logo mark incorporates circular motifs to reflect the unbroken bonds between the organization, the families, and the local leaders. Circles communicate wholeness, inclusion, and the endless cycle of giving and growing together.
Angled lines and ascending forms within the identity point toward the future. This upward energy visually represents the hope children and families experience — moving from survival to thriving, from poverty to possibility.
Soft, flowing, nature-inspired shapes echo the organization’s humble beginnings: a mission trip, a woman dragging herself forward to say “thank you,” and a leader named Cameo Griffiths who found joy in unexpected places. These organic elements remind viewers that this work grows from the ground up, not from a distant corporate office.
The typography had to be clean, legible sans-serif typefaces were selected for the wordmark and supporting text. The typography feels open and inviting — never intimidating — so that donors, partners, and the community in Kibera alike can read and connect with the name Nurturing Hope for the Nations. This builds instant credibility and warmth.
